Beer Bread, Anyone?
I’m still trying to get the hang of this “housewife” stuff, though I am (unfortunately) not yet a wife. When I was younger and had more time for just myself, I cooked and baked like I was practicing to be the next Betty Crocker. Casseroles, pastas, side dishes, cookies, rolls, cakes, candies. And bread. I love baking bread. It could have something to do with being able to take out my frustrations on a large lump of moldable, maleable, forgiveable dough…but I won’t swear to it. At least once a week, you could find me covered in flour, worrying over a lump of dough on the kitchen counter. I actually enjoyed it.
Now, it seems as though I never bake or cook, unless it is a simple fried supper The Boyfriend has requested. I swear, this boy fries EVERYTHING.
Zuccini
Potatoes
Deer

Antelope
Moose
Pork
Pickles
Apples
Chicken
…the list goes on. And don’t get me wrong; the stuff is great. We get a majority of our meat from his multiple hunting expeditions each year, and it’s absolutely amazing. Really lean stuff. Healthy. But when he insists on frying it, I think that totally takes away from the whole good-for-you thing these cuts of meat had going for them. Not to mention, there is no challenge in frying. Like I said; the stuff is great. Although my arteries hate me, my taste-buds rejoice with each bite. However, IT IS TOO EASY. I don’t get any joy out of it. But, I don’t have time for anything other than throwing a cut of meet and some veggies in a pan of hot oil. So my days of baking real bread are over. I have resorted to packaged boxes of Beer Bread. A package of pre-mixed ingredients, a can of beer (or soda, or carbonated juice), a quick stir, and I’m done. It’s delicious, but where’s the fun?
I would love, love, love to get some new recipes that are quick, easy, and different. Because different is typically fun, even if it is easy. It may be time to invest in some new cookbooks. One for moms-on-the-go.
How on earth did they do it in the “old days?” I can’t imagine having multiple young children to care for, taking care of the house, my husband, and finding time to fix breakfast, dinner, and supper. Old farm-wives amaze the heck out of me.
